Tallahassee, FL -- November 28, 2011 --

The City of Tallahassee will begin construction overnight on Wednesday, November 30, at the westbound Tennessee Street approach at the Capital Circle Northwest intersection to permanently reduce the number of right turn lanes. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) approved the construction after the City closed the lane temporarily to conduct a traffic study prompted by the excessive number of red light violations at the intersection. The study, which consisted of monitoring the modified intersection under a yield condition, did not result in any traffic or safety concerns. The intersection is managed by the State of Florida as both Tennessee Street and Capital Circle are state roadways.

Prior to the temporary lane closure that went into effect on October 21, the dual right turn lanes were controlled by a traffic signal, and right turns on red were prohibited. FDOT prohibited turning right on red because of the size of the intersection and limited sight distance in combination with the dual turn lanes. Construction, which will consist of restriping the lane, is expected to be completed no later than Friday, December 2.
