Tallahassee, FL - Twelve years ago he gave his life protecting our community. Sergeant Dale Green was memorialized today so that his legacy would live on forever.

DeSoto Street leading to Lake Ella is now SGT Dale Green Way.

The City of Tallahassee and the Police Department held a street renaming ceremony Friday morning to honor their fallen comrade.

Kelly Burke, SGT Green's friend and former TPD officer says, "This does hurt. But, at the same time, I'm so proud, so intensely proud that I live in a city that has the intelligence and the wisdom to understand that we need to memorialize Dale in some way. Naming a street after him, a street that leads to the police department, is a great, great way."

SGT Dale Green was shot and killed by a home invasion robber November 13, 2002.

His wife, Deb Green, says that was the worst day of her life. But, Friday is one of the best. "Because we're honoring Dale and I'm so proud of him. I was always proud of him. He was an awesome husband, a wonderful father, my very best friend in the world."

SGT Green's mother, Betty Green, says, "It is a remembrance. It's important to us and we hope it'll be important to the children that grow up here and learn about him. He was special and we loved him."

The street signs at the Meridian Road entrance and at the end where the street meets Lake Ella Drive were both changed to SGT Dale Green Way.

Following the ceremony, SGT Green's family and police department staff took the first stroll on the renamed street, by walking to the police station, via the new SGT Dale Green Way.

City Commissioner Scott Maddox and TPD Officer Robert Hanby were instrumental in making the street name happen.

SGT Green was 45 years old. He had been with the police department for 13 years.

The Tallahassee Police Department held a street renaming ceremony this morning.

The road leading to Lake Ella on the Meridian Road end is now named after SGT Dale Green.

SGT Green was shot and killed while responding to a home invasion robbery in November 2002. He had been with TPD for 13 years.

SGT Green's wife, Deb, says, "Our children and I prayed that this day would become a reality. We really wanted Tallahassee, just for there to be a way for him to always be remembered. So, this is a very, very happy, happy, day."

The old street name, DeSoto Street, was named after 16th century Spaniard Hernando DeSoto.

SGT Green's wife, mother, daughter, and granddaughters were present for today's name change.
