You could see a couple of hiccups the next time you drive through the Gaines Street/Stadium Drive/Lake Bradford Road intersection in Tallahassee.

Construction near FSU's Doak Campbell Stadium has just started, and the intersection will soon become more accessible for drivers.

City officials had to close a few lanes on Stadium Drive today, but when it's all said and done, drivers will be allowed to turn left on Lake Bradford Road and Gaines Street.

Soon, straight arrows won't be the only direction you'll see going westbound on Stadium Drive in Tallahassee.

"It gets kind of annoying," said Nathan Scheer, FSU Student.

Construction has begun to open up north and south travel from Stadium Drive onto Lake Bradford Road, which are not currently available.

Workers are altering medians in the intersection that will allow drivers to make a left turn onto Lake Bradford Road.

"I think it will be better because then it won't be so congested, especially during football games. People would be able to travel from the parking lot and go down that road. You won't have to hit so many lights. I think it's just going to be easier for the community," said Scheer.

City officials say that's the idea - to make it easier and more accessible.

Workers say the construction will also allow drivers to turn left to travel east on Gaines Street from Stadium Drive.

"I think it's going to make traffic flow a lot smoother, and it'll make for faster travel times. For students, any faster travel times will make them not have to leave so early for school, and it'll just make it a lot more convenient," said Kevin Harrigan, FSU Student.

City officials say the construction is preliminary work for Phase III of the Gaines Street Project. That phase includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Gaines Street and Woodward Avenue.

There will be some single lane shifting affecting northbound traffic on Lake Bradford Road tomorrow to accommodate the Stadium Drive construction.

Phase III, where the roundabout will be included, is slated to begin March 1st.

Once complete, drivers going west on Stadium Drive will be able to turn left onto Lake Bradford Road, as well as turn left to go back east on Gaines Street.

News Release: City of Tallahassee

The intersection of Gaines Street, Stadium Drive and Lake Bradford Road is set to become more accessible for motorists. On Monday and Tuesday, a contractor will begin work to alter medians in the intersection. The work will open up north/south travel from Stadium Drive onto Lake Bradford Road (and vice versa) that is not currently available.

To safely accommodate construction on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 17-18, there will be lane closures in the area between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday's closures will include single lane shifts affecting eastbound and westbound traffic on Stadium Drive. Tuesday’s closures will include a single lane shift affecting northbound traffic on Lake Bradford Road.

Following the work on the medians, crews will reconfigure lights and signal timing at the intersection. Once the signal work is complete, the new north/south pattern will be opened to traffic. This should occur by March 15.

This construction is part of preliminary work for Phase III of the Gaines Street project, which is slated to begin March 1. Phase III of the Gaines Street project includes the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Gaines Street and Woodward Avenue.
