Tallahassee, Florida - March 20, 2012 -

Friday morning, March 23, motorists along Gaines Street will get to feel like they're in England for approximately 750 feet. The City of Tallahassee will be shifting construction activities to the north lanes between Macomb Street and just west of Railroad Avenue. When this shift occurs, westbound motorists will begin using the newly paved south lane.

Gaines Street will remain a one-lane, one-way westbound road between Macomb Street and Woodward Avenue after this shift. Traffic headed eastbound on Gaines Street will continue to be detoured at Woodward Avenue north to W. St. Augustine Street.

Businesses in the construction zone remain open. When construction shifts to the north side, Euphoria Tattoos, What's The Point? and Avant Garb will begin using their back doors for entrance and egress. Patrons can use the current drive located between Euphoria and Action Auto to get to the rear of the building. Access to all the businesses will be maintained to the greatest extent possible during construction.

The traffic lane shift marks another milestone in the Gaines Street project. The south sidewalks and seating walls are complete. The first layer of new asphalt is being applied prior to the shift, and work has begun on the medians.

Work on the north lane will include undercutting the road (removing the old road and bricks), repaving, removing and rebuilding sidewalks, creation of seating walls, and installation of new light poles and traffic signal mast arms, among other items.
