Florida Republican Senator Turns Away From Bush
ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ Florida Senator Mel Martinez was pragmatic when he spoke about disagreeing with President Bush on a multimillion dollar water bill.
The country's first Cuban-born senator said Monday he understood that Bush vetoed it because it contained a lot of pork. But even so, Martinez said it was a good bill for Florida because of money earmarked for an Everglades cleanup. He helped Democrats override Bush's veto.
It was the second piece of bad news Martinez had to give Bush recently. Earlier, Martinez announced he was quitting his position as chairman of the Republican National Committee, a job the president lobbied him hard to accept.
