Senators Discuss Pulling Support For War

Posted: Tue 9:25 AM, Nov 27, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Fresh from a trip to Iraq, Senator Saxby Chambliss says Congress might call for the outster of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki if political reconciliation is not seen in Baghdad.

Chambliss and Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said yesterday that unless al-Maliki makes more political progress by next month, the U.S. should consider pulling political or financial support for his government.

The stern warnings indicate that GOP patience on the war is not bottomless, although it is greatly increased this fall because of security gains made by the military.

Chambliss and Graham traveled to Iraq as part of a congressional
delegation. The Georgia Republican said the visit proved to him that security has improved as a result of this year's troop build-up. But he said the improvements "are not irreversible'' and that political progress is critical to maintaining stability.
