Florida Republican Senator Mel Martinez got a wakeup call after a new poll showed the junior senator’s seat is in jeopardy. The Quinnipiac University Poll claims only 36 percent of likely voters think the senator deserves a second term. 40 percent say they’d vote against the first term senator. While support for Martinez is low, 68 percent of likely voters say they approve of the job Charlie Crist is doing. Quinnipiac Pollster Peter Brown says while Martinez is down right now, there’s still a long time before he’s up for reelection.
“It’s a sign of weakness. The Democrats obviously have much better opportunity at unseating Senator Mel Martinez than they do Governor Crist. Now again we have a few years to go and that’s a lifetime in politics,” Brown says.
And of course both Governor Crist and Senator Martinez aren’t up for reelection until 2010.
