Biden's Replacement

DOVER, Del. (AP) The man picked to fill Joe Biden's U.S.
Senate seat doesn't want his new colleagues to write him off as an
irrelevant placeholder.

Ted Kaufman says he plans to only serve out the rest of Biden's
term, which is up in 2010. But he says he wouldn't have taken the
job if he didn't think he could accomplish something.

Kaufman knows the Senate well, having served on Biden's staff
from 1973 to 1994. For 19 years he was Biden's chief of staff. Now
he's asking to be assigned to the judiciary and foreign relations
committees Biden chaired after he's sworn into office Friday
morning.

Come 2010, many political observers expect Biden's oldest son,
Delaware attorney general Beau Biden, to run for his dad's old
seat.
