Kennedy's Withdrawal Creates a Political Mystery

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) It's a mystery that's led to a lot of speculation.

Kennedy was widely considered a front-runner until she abruptly
withdrew from consideration, citing unspecified personal reasons.

But was she really the favorite? The appointment is up to New
York Gov. David Paterson. And a person close to Paterson says he
had no intention of picking Kennedy because he thought she had
handled herself poorly in introducing herself to the public as a
candidate.

The person also says there were concerns about possible tax
problems, a potential "nanny problem'' involving a housekeeper,
and media rumors that Kennedy's marriage was on the rocks.

A Kennedy spokesman calls the annonymous accusations
"mudslinging'' and says it "demeans'' the process and "all those
involved.''
