Florida Sen. Gelber to Run for US Senate

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- State Sen. Dan Gelber will announce his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, becoming the second major Democrat to get in the race.

Gelber, who served is the House Democratic leader the past two years before being elected to the Senate in November, will make his announcement Tuesday at his Miami Beach home, said Christian Ulvert, who will serve as Gelber's campaign press secretary.

Gelber is a former federal prosecutor who also worked as the top staff lawyer to U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn of Georgia.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek is also running for the seat Republican Sen. Mel Martinez is giving up after the 2010 election.
