At Thursday night's town hall forum at the Chapel, Andrew Gillum and several community organization leaders spoke to folks about how an economic stimulus would affect them. Gillum says Tallahassee currently has a 7% unemployment rate-- it usually sits at about 3%. Forum speakers presented examples of ready-to-go construction projects and community programs that could spark job creation and economic growth locally.
As politicians debate the stimulus--Gillum and other supporters are urging folks to get involved and show their support. Those who attended the forum could fill out forms stating their position on a stimulus package. Organizers say the forms will be sent to Florida's respective politicians.
"We want our congress members in Washington D.C. who are sitting in their beautiful leather chairs and cushy jobs with great salaries to know that there are people in communities like ours that are hurting." said Gillum. The town hall meeting also offered a chance for people to voice their opinions about a stimulus plan.
