Sen. Nan Rich of Weston was unanimously picked by her Democratic colleagues Wednesday for the 2010-2012 term.

Former Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Miami, was the only female Democratic senator to have previously served in a top leadership position. Margolis presided as president of the Florida Senate from 1990-1992, but was never the caucus leader.

A New York City native, Rich was elected to the Florida House in 2000 and the Senate in 2004.

Before politics, Rich was president of the National Council of Jewish Women from 1996-1999 and a board member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
