News Release: Florida Senate

Tallahassee, Fla. – This week the Senate Commerce and Tourism Committee passed Senate Bill 792, sponsored by Senator Anitere Flores (R-Miami), which calls for a 3-day, back-to-school sales tax holiday for Florida’s families.

“Schools supplies like pens, pencils and paper are critical for every child in the classroom,” said Senator Flores. “By providing families with a sales-tax holiday on these items, Florida can help more students be prepared to succeed and more hard-working families save money. The purpose of the holiday is to provide tax relief to families on necessary back to school purchases and other basic need items.”

SB 792 provides an exemption from state and local sales tax during a 3-day period, from August 1 through August 3, 2014, for school-related supplies. Tax-free items include clothing costing $75 or less, school supplies costing $15 or less, and personal computers and related accessories costing $750 or less. As technology advances, we must recognize the important role devices such as tablets and personal computers play in educating our children.
