>Press Release: The Dream Defenders
The Dream Defenders will mark the one-week anniversary of their “takeover” of the Florida statehouse by announcing plans to convene their own special legislative session to examine the circumstances that led to the killing of Trayvon Martin over a year ago: the school-to-prison pipeline, stand your ground vigilantism, and racial profiling.
During the session, the youth group will introduce “Trayvon’s Law,” a bill that proposes to “fix” this environment.
The Dream Defenders will lay out plans for the mock legislative session in a press conference on Tuesday, July 23rd at 1:00 PM at Florida State Capitol.
Florida Governor Rick Scott met with the Dream Defenders last Thursday and denied their demands for him to assemble a special session of the legislature. He has since remained firm in his decision.
“Florida is in a state of emergency,” Dream Defender Executive Director Phillip Agnew said. “In failing to recognize the gravity of the need for change in this moment, Governor Scott is not exercising real leadership. So we’ll do it for him.”
The group has no plans to end their occupation of the statehouse while the mock legislature is in session. Political Director Ciara Taylor explained, “When the Governor finally yields to our demands and assembles a special session of the legislature, we want our representatives’ jobs to be as easy as possible.
We will go ahead and do the hard work of collecting evidence and analyzing expert testimony for them.” The Dream Defenders will convene the session next week.
