Tallahassee, Florida- September 4, 2012

A group of students at FSU say they're angry about Governor Rick Scott's voting laws. Today, about a dozen students hit the pavement in protest of Florida voting laws.

The group of students call themselves the Dream Defenders. They gathered on FSU's campus just outside the Bellamy building at 6:30 pm to protest against what they call Governor Rick Scott's voter suppression tactics.

They say voter identification requirements make it hard for students to vote in a district other than their hometown.

Said Michael Sampson, one protester: "College students have to have, if they vote with a student I.D., it has to have a signature and a correct residence on their ID."

The Florida Division of Elections website shows at the polls voters are asked for picture id with a signature. If a student id does not have a signature, then they must have another form of id with a photo and signature.

Students also protested the shortened early voting days saying it targeted minority voters who statistically vote early.

But Governor Scott's office argues that early and absentee voting has increased since the new voting laws went into effect last year.

And they go on to say that early voting is more flexible... Because it allows voting precincts to stay open later. The student protestors were also hoping for an appearance from the governor tonight as he was schedule to speak at an FSU Republicans meeting. WCTV has been told the governor canceled.
