TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Republican-controlled Florida Legislature is conceding in court filings that it has discarded records related to the once-a-decade process of drawing new districts.

The revelation drew swift criticism from those groups who are challenging the new districts in court. Deirdre Macnab, president of the League of Women Voters of Florida, said she was in "almost disbelief" that documents were "destroyed."

Just last week, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that legislators can be forced to testify in the ongoing legal battle and that certain records must be turned over.

House Speaker Will Weatherford in a statement said that legislators had not intentionally destroyed any records. Instead the House discarded records according to existing rules. He also said that the Legislature has already handed over thousands of documents.
