DORAL, Fla. (AP) -- Gov. Rick Scott is urging President Barack Obama to consider sanctions against Venezuela, where opponents of President Nicolas Maduro are staging countrywide protests.

The ongoing unrest in Venezuela hits close to home in Florida, which is home to some 100,000 people of Venezuelan origin.

Scott has sent a letter to Obama expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela. He wants Obama to consider sanctions as well as revoking the U.S. visas of anyone involved in attacks on the protesters. He says "we must stand squarely for liberty and democracy and against the forces of oppression and tyranny."

Scott and U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., will meet Thursday with the Venezuelan community in Doral.
