Governor Rick Scott Makes Faux Pas with Spain's King

Miami, FL (AP) -- May 24, 2012 --

Apparently Florida Gov. Rick Scott decided not to ignore the elephant in the room.

Scott met this week in Madrid with Spanish King Juan Carlos and repeatedly asked about the monarch's recent and controversial elephant hunt in Botswana. The 74-year-old king injured his public standing by going on the expensive hunt while the rest of Spain faces a major financial crisis. He also injured his hip.

In videos of the encounter, Scott joked he'd ridden elephants but never tried to shoot them.

And he told the king he needed a better tale than saying he hurt his hip getting out of bed.

The king laughed uncomfortably.

Scott was in Spain to drum up business for Florida. He returned Thursday, saying he'd had a positive meeting with the king.

Spain has always been a 2 bit back water country. It wasn't too long ago that General Franco ruled. Spaniards think they are equal to the rest of the Europeans but obviously that's not true.

Did you not learn in history class that it was Spain that financed Christopher Colombus' voyage across the Atlantic in 1491? You do know who Christopher Colombus is, don't you? There's a holiday named after him.

What a waste of money. Five Spanish banks were just downgraded and the S&P reports Spain is headed for a double dip recession. Sure, lots of money for the Spaniards to spend in Florida.

Scott doesn't collect a yearly salary for being Gov. because he refused the pay. A trip out of the country is normal business practice for past Gov. and they DID collect salaries.

Anyone can buy an office in the good ole USA, or anywhere for that matter. Hitler was backed by banks like Union Bank owned by Prescott Bush.

Okay, I despise Rick Scott, but these diplomatic faux paus become overblown; the stuff of urban legend that is superfluous; like Obama giving a polite bow to a despotic Sultan, or George H.W. Bush vomiting at a Japanese state dinneror George W. Bush asking the queen of England, "How do you get to be a Duke?" Florida is about to celebrate our cinqua centennial and establishing a friendly commerce w...ith Spain is actually a good idea. Was it presumptious to attempt a "good-ol'-boy" ribbing of the King of Spain? Juan Carlos, and Spaniards in general, are well known for their sense of self-effascing ironic humor. I give Scott a thumbs-up for visiting Spain; a pass for attempting a lame bit of humor and our own media a Bronx cheer for making an issue out of such nonsense.

As much as I hate to admit it, I agree with you. It's just that I dislike him so much, it's hard to give up an opportunity to take jabs at him.

It's not Scott's fault that the Spanish king does stupid things and doesn't even have a sense of humor!

The voters that voted to elect this joke of a governor ought to be ashamed of themselves. The State of Florida can do much better than Rick Scott. Please vote this joker out of office!

We have not had a decent person as governor since Bob Graham, so you're comparing Criminal Scott to the material one finds in one's septic tank ... big deal!
  • by Sara on May 25, 2012 at 09:39 AM
What exactly was the faux pas? Mentioning something that may have been humorous but the king was embarrassed because he did something embarrassing? or wrong.... why kill an elephant anyway? This is not a faux pas - misleading headline if you ask me.

The whole situation was politically embarrassing for the King and it had run its course. A joke was attempted that flopped and re-opened wounds unnecessarily. Why even joke about it when you're trying to establish a relationship?

Rick Scott is just an unidicted criminal. Why would anyone think he knows how to behave in front of a King? If you ask me, the King ought to be checking his pockets...
