The Florida Primary on August 14th decided some winners in our area, but there are some races that will continue. Both the Leon County Commission at-Large Seat 1 and Tallahassee City Commission Seat 1 races are headed for a run-off.

Of the three commission races decided in the City and County, only City Commission Seat 2 had an outright winner with incumbent Andrew Gillum. Voters will have to decide again in November who will win Leon County Commission at-Large Seat 1 and Tallahassee City Commission Seat 1.

Incumbent Akin Akinyemi had 3 challengers. Akinyemi was able to secure the majority of the vote with 33% but did not get the 50 % needed to win outright. That means the next highest percentage winner, Mary Ann Lindley, will go on to the runoff election against Akinyemi November 6th. Lindley squeaked out ahead of Fred Varn by a little over one percentage point. Only the top two advance to the runoff election.

The City Commission Seat 1 race was for the vacated seat of former commissioner Mark Mustian. 6 candidates were voted down to two, with former mayor Scott Maddox getting the 40 % majority of the vote and Steve Stewart earning 34%.

Stewart was the subject of some negative mailers that went out to citizens from the Leon County Democratic executive committee. But Maddox said Tuesday night that he was happy he stayed out of that and his campaign stayed positive.

The next couple of months are going to be very exciting and nerve racking for the four candidates, and we'll hear from some of them on their new campaign plans. Stay with WCTV for updates.
