Church Says They Have No Say In Gays in the Military

WASHINGTON -- Washington Cardinal Donald Wuerl says
the Roman Catholic church has no position on whether gays and
lesbians should be allowed to serve openly in the military.

On Fox News Sunday, Wuerl was asked if he opposed Congress's
repeal of "don't ask, don't tell" -- a repeal that President Barack Obama signed into law last week.

He said, "That's a question that has to be worked out politically."

But Wuerl, who is archbishop in the nation's capital, reiterated church teaching that sex should be reserved for marriage between a man and a woman. He added that if the church is forced to accept a redefinition of marriage, its ministry becomes limited.

When Washington D.C. legalized gay marriage this year, Wuerl's archdiocese ended its 80-year foster care program rather than license same-sex couples.

The Bible tells us selling our daughters into slavery is acceptable and to have a wife stoned to death if she does not prove herself to be a virgin on the first night. The Christians that are imposing their beliefs on others only pick certain parts of the Bible to cite. Otherwise the Bible would lose credibility as people begin to think that all its teachings are more relevant to a time past. Just as slavery has become unacceptable, so too will the idea that homosexuality is unacceptable. Oh, and here's the icing on this fact filled cake I just baked for you: Jesus had two Dads. :P Live and let be please.

let them do what they want to do. Nevermind what man says. one day WE ALL will have to answer to our Heavenly Father. Heaven or Hell - there is no in between. The Bible tells us so.

boy, if i read the story correctly (since i can read i'm pretty sure i did), the catholic church is only saying that they CAN'T say anything about gays serving in the military. it doesn't sound like they're judging anyone at all. and also, i really don't see why this whole openly serving thing is an issue. first it was the blacks, then women, and now gays. we've come so far.

Libertarian - you apparently don't understand how stupid and bigoted so many "Americans" are, as evidenced by the response from "anonymous@08:52". It's no wonder the country is in such turmoil, when such morons form a distinct and significant portion of the population. Their "thinking" is one of the reasons this country continues to fall behind the rest of the world, and their reliance on a book of collected myths, legends and outright lies that was composed thousands of years ago by itinerant shepherds, vagabonds and drug-addled priests is ridiculous.

@Libertarian,Women are not in combat units but if they let gay men openly flaunt their sexuality why not let women in. I'd rather have a butch fighting with me than a fairy.

Funny - In Europe this isn't even an issue for them and they've had gays openly in the service and in high governement positions for years without problems but it's made to be a major issue in America. Same thing was said a few decades ago about women serving and I think that worked out OK.

The Catholics are a fine bunch to be judging somebody else. They're as slimy as anybody.

The bible calls a man with a man an abomination, paraphrased I know. It also tells parents to kill their own children under circumstances that have nothing to do with homosexuality, as well as mixing fibers in clothes por eating shell fish as being abominations. Modern Christians pick and choose what they want to follow based on the prejudices they were taught. Christ never condemned a single homosexual. Gays have always been in the US military and it has only caused harm when they are persecuted based on hate and ignorance. Just because they serve openly does not mean they have permission to violate the military code of conduct. But straight men and women in the military violate daily. Women go out to sea for 6 months and come back 2 to 3 months pregnant. Married men and women cheat on their straight spouses, both at home and while deployed. We are a country of hypocrites using religion to hold onto USA's last legal prejudice.

My 2nd comment: God in His Bible says homosexuality is a sin. Why can't the Catholics simply say what God says and forget what man's opinion might be?
