News Release: Florida A&M University

Florida A&M University’s (FAMU) Department of Music is continuing to add to its legacy of service and scholarship. On Tuesday, Dec. 17, Dr. Shelby Chipman, associate professor of music, led more than 40 students from the department’s chamber ensembles and the Marching “100” to Lithonia, Ga., to present aspiring music students at Miller Grove High School with a workshop on anti-hazing. The anti-hazing workshop was organized by Bryan Smith, special assistant to president for anti-hazing and Deirdre McRoy, department of music compliance officer.

While there, the department gave Miller Grove students the opportunity to audition for its music scholarship program. Various FAMU musicians also treated the high school students to a special mini-concert.

From Georgia, the music department will travel to the Midwest to hold more auditions and share the same anti-hazing presentation and concert with students at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Prep High School on Dec. 20. While in Chicago, the department will attend the U.S. Marines Band Concert and will participate in the prestigious National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Clinic. The clinic is one of the most attended band and orchestra conferences around the globe, as more than 10,000 musicians and educators are expected to attend.

According to Chipman, the music department is adamant about its presence at the conference because of its desire to “ensure that the Florida A&M University Department of Music’s students are in the upper vanguard of learning those skills and strategies that will enable them to develop and be prepared for music settings upon graduation.”

During the conference, FAMU students will participate in clinical and formal sessions, special interest workshops, musical performances, informal receptions, networking opportunities and learn more about the latest music material, instruments and equipment available in the music industry.

The mission of the Florida A&M University Department of Music is to provide the highest quality music education at the undergraduate level for music majors embarking on careers as teachers, scholars, performers or composers. It is also the mission of the department to teach non-majors and members of the community about music as a part of human culture and experience.
