Tallahassee, FL - FAMU Way is about to go a long way. Construction has begun on a project to extend the road near both universities. The extension project also includes sprucing up the area.

Tallahassee City Mayor John Marks says, "We're about to build the most beautiful road in the City of Tallahassee."

Preschoolers from New Beginnings at FAMU helped city officials and FAMU administrators break ground for the start of construction Monday.

FAMU Way will be extended from Wahnish Way to Lake Bradford Road.

Larry Robinson, Ph.D.,FAMU Interim President, says, "This is the entrance of FAMU. Thousands of students would get off the train here with nothing other than a bag and maybe a sandwich or something that their parents packed to go up this hill to find their future. So, this road is a very, very important part of a great legacy."

City officials say the much-needed east-west corridor will help alleviate traffic downtown.

The $37 million extension project will also include enhancements to the existing FAMU Way corridor between Wahnish Way and MLK. Blvd. There will be several roundabouts, landscaping, on-street parking, and more.

Darryl Jones, from the Citizen Advisory Committee, says, "Once FAMU Way is complete, people will want to live here. Businesses will want to move here. This roadway will become a source of pride for this entire community."

One more thing that city officials take pride in in this FAMU Way Extension Project, is that students from FAMU's School of Architecture helped with the design.

The project is expected to be finished by 2016.

News Release: Florida A&M University

Tallahassee, Fla. -- Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 26, the City of Tallahassee’s Electric Utility will be installing duct banks for electric and gas lines along a portion of FAMU Way. The road will be closed between South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and the entrance to the FAMU Child Development Center. The road will reopen by 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 2.

Duct bank work involves open trenches and heavy equipment. Barricades will clearly route traffic around the construction, which involves detours at South Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, Gamble Street and Railroad Avenue. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are advised to use caution in the area and expect minor delays.

All businesses and schools in the area will maintain access by their normal driveways; however motorists could be required to approach from another direction or through the detour.
