Tallahassee, FL -- February 7, 2012 --

Florida legislatures are trying to make catching the school bus for students in the sunshine state.

Proposed Senate bill 250 would allow districts to install cameras on the side of the bus to catch drivers who violate school bus stop lights. The bill passed the Senate Transportation Committee by an overwhelming 9-1 vote. It's next stop will be the Education Committee.

Lawmakers like Sen. Oscar Braynon say it's all about keeping students safe.

"It passed because it's really about safety and it's about saving the lives of a possible of a child that's trying to cross and someone running a stop sign not thinking that there was a child in the street," said Braynon.

The bill still has to make it through two more committees before heading to the Senate Floor. The bill would not necessarily force school districts to put cameras on the buses. That choice would be left up to school boards.

Maybe this will also stop the bus drivers who constantly pull out into oncomiing traffic with no regard for others safety. See it once or twice every week.

Can we not have bus stops every ten feet. Make the lazy kids walk some.

This would be great......if the Legislature budgets and provides the funds for the cameras. Otherwise, could be just another unfunded mandate. I know, I know.....each distict can decide whether or not to install the cameras. If a particular school district decides not to install the cameras due to lack of funds, they will be accused of not caring about the students' safety.
