Tallahassee, FL (AP) - The Florida Senate is recommending college students pay three percent more in tuition this fall.

A Senate panel on Tuesday rolled out budget recommendations for the state's 11 public universities and 28 colleges. The tuition hike would apply to those students enrolled in colleges and workforce education programs.

The Senate proposal does not raise tuition for university students, but university officials have the power to raise tuition up to 15 percent a year without legislative approval.

Gov. Rick Scott kept tuition flat in his budget proposal for 2012. He has said he is generally opposed to raising the cost of college this year.

The House budget includes an eight percent tuition hike for both college and university students.

Lawmakers are expected to pass a final budget by March.
