State lawmakers in Georgia say changes need to be made in how students are disciplined in school.

A Georgia Senate committee met Thursday to look into how children are punished and expelled from school.

Officials say there are disparities in discipline in children's races that senators say are harmful to kids.

Senator Emanuel Jones says the goal is to come up with programs and better ways to deal with the issues. He says, "There's a lot less in school suspensions, out of school suspensions, a lot less expulsions; there's' a lot less disciplinary issues in school systems when there's early intervention in dealing with our kids."

There will be five more hearings on the issue. The next one is scheduled for September 25th.
