Leon County School buses will soon be green. Not literally. They'll be running on natural gas.
Today Leon County administrators and Nopetro gas reps broke ground on the Capital City's first natural gas station. The project is made possible by a public-private partnership between the two agencies. Governor Rick Scott was there to celebrate.
"Hopefully it will be a model for what we can do across the state. And it's nice to see a company come up with an idea like this with Nopetro and start a business right here in Tallahassee," said Scott.
"This is the first Nopetro facility in the state and we have plans now to develop 11 additional ones in the next three years," said Nopetro CEO Jorge Herrera.
The station will be up and running in August. Just in time for the 2012 school year. Superintendent Pons says he looks forward to saving 25 percent on fuel costs. He says he'll put the money saved, back into the classroom.
