Tallahassee, FL - Montford Middle School students today (10-20-2010) learned firsthand about financial choices their parents make each month to pay the family's electric bill. Recognizing Energy Awareness Month, Florida Public Service Commissioner (PSC) Lisa Polak Edgar and PSC staff engaged students in a review of their families' energy needs, highlighting the importance of reducing daily energy consumption.

Commissioner Edgar told "Green Team" and "Science Club" members,
"Conservation begins with you and your choices. By helping your family
follow even a few energy-saving tips, you can reduce energy usage, save
money, and help our environment."

During an energy exercise, students took charge of their families'
utility bills by using play money to pay for their energy habits.
Whatever they and their families didn't spend on home energy, they could use to buy things they wanted. Students fielded PSC questions and, depending on their answers, deposited the required amount of money in either their "me" bank or in the "utility" bucket. When the money was counted, students learned how conserving energy can put more spending money in their pockets.

Lincoln High School's multi-media team also participated, demonstrating
the media's important role in promoting better public understanding of
Florida's future energy needs. The team will produce an Energy
Awareness Month program that will air on Leon County School Board's
cable channel 23.

Montford Middle School is one of two Leon County schools participating
in "Schools on Solar," providing students with a first-hand education on
energy conservation and renewable energy. According to the City of
Tallahassee, each participating school has been equipped with a Solar
Thermal System for producing hot water and a Solar Voltaic System for
producing electricity.

October's Energy Awareness Month is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, and this year's theme is, "Powering America; We're On Target." Consumer tips from the U.S. Department of Energy's
