Public Info Made Easy
The highest paid Florida university-worker makes over 1 million dollars a year. That's according to the most up-to-date government data. A new website helps you find public information like that much easier.

Public Info Made Easy

Casey Jones is an FSU grad. The Florida university system that taught him his programming skills, is the very university system he's keeping an eye on.

Just a year out of college, Jones has developed a data-sharing website called Floridalytics.com.

The site organizes public info like university workers' salaries. You can find the same info on this government website, but Jones says it's presented in a format that's not user friendly.

"It's really hard to get at individual facts and things that are relative to you," said Jones.

With Floridalytics you can look up a specific worker's pay. All you have to do is click. Or maybe you just want to see who makes the most money. Click. Or perhaps you're a university worker and want to compare your salary. Click. Students think it's a great idea.

"Well it would be interesting to find out what our tuition is paying for, how much our professors actually make," said FSU student Robin Agness.

Well according to the most recent numbers, an assistant professor at UF makes more than 78 thousand annually. At the University of West Florida it's a different story. An assistant prof. there makes about 50 grand less.

Jones says one of the coolest things about his site is the capability to share information so easily.

"It really makes it personal. It personalizes the data and allows you to share it and that's what's different here," said Jones.

Public money, public office, public retirement benefits ... it is not about privacy--it is about public accountability.

What about politicians? They are public workers but their salaries are not shown. Where is the real transparency?
