Gadsden County, FL - Students in Gadsden County joined Leon and many of our area districts in returning to the classrooms today.

Administrators say they're looking forward to a productive school year. With a smooth first day of school Monday, they say they're off to a great start.

One of the main goals is to increase the number of "A" schools in Gadsden County from five to at least seven.

Havana Middle School -- the district's only secondary school to get an "A" -- is working on a repeat.

The school's principal, Delshauna Jackson, says, "The plans and the preparation that went into preparing for our students for the first day have gone well. We've had very few hiccups. The kids are excited about the new school year."

Construction at Havana Middle is progressing. By this time next year, it will be a combined elementary and middle school.

Other changes this school year include James A. Shanks Middle School changing its name to Shanks SMART Academy. The school will focus more on science and technology.
