TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s (DBPR) Division of Certified Public Accounting is encouraging minority accounting students across the state to apply for this year’s Clay Ford scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to minority students studying to become certified public accountants (CPAs). More than $1 million has been awarded by the CPA Education Minority Assistance Program since the program’s implementation in 1999.

“Florida’s greatest investment lies in the education of our youth,” said DBPR Secretary Ken Lawson. “The Clay Ford scholarship is a great way to assist eligible students with the costs of school, therefore helping bright students complete all of the requirements necessary for CPA licensure. I hope to encourage all of these bright students to stay and do business in Florida.”

Applications for the scholarship must be postmarked by June 1, 2014. For more information on the scholarship, including the application process and eligibility criteria, please visit www.myfloridalicense.com/CPAScholarship.

The CPA Education Minority Assistance Program was established to encourage fifth-year accounting students to remain in school and complete the necessary requirements to obtain a Florida CPA license. The Clay Ford scholarship is funded by a $10 portion from each individual and firm license fee. If requirements are met, applicants may be eligible for scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 per semester, which are awarded for a maximum of two semesters.

The Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s mission is to license efficiently and regulate fairly. The Department licenses and regulates more than one million businesses and professionals ranging from hotels and restaurants, real estate agents and accountants to veterinarians, contractors and cosmetologists.
