Godby Principal Releases Statement On Student Death [GALLERY]

Tallahassee FL- We are following a developing story about a Tallahassee High School student who died suddenly. An investigation looking into the death of one Godby High School Student has people mourning and others asking why.

"I was in shock," said one Godby student after learning fellow classmate 15 year old Tariq Barfield suddenly passed.

Surprised to hear one of their Godby High School classmates, fifteen year old Tariq Barfield suddenly passed away.

The track and field team was using the track to practice on when the young man collapsed.

As Tallahassee Police Department Spokesman Robert Grasso told us, "The coaching staff was there they dialed 911, and EMS responded and transported him to the hospital. He later passed away unfortunately."

TPD also told us said they are currently investigating the cause of death. Wednesday Godby High told their students Barfield passed.
"I felt sad he was a real friend," explained one student mourning the loss of Barfield.

As Godby High School tries to make sense of the loss. We were told today guidance counselors and school psychologists spoke to students. Principal Shelly Bell released a statement saying "Details of the cause of death are not known at this time and we ask that you pray for the family."

For classmates who knew Barfield they say, "Well he is still is going to be in everybody's heads and everything like that. So, Rest In Peace Tariq."

Statement from Shelly Bell, Principal, Godby High School<:

It is with a heavy heart that I send this email. Last night a member of the Godby family, a 9th grade student, passed away after falling ill on the track. Details of the cause of death are not known at this time and we ask that you pray for the family. We are all profoundly saddened by his death, and our hearts go out to his parents. Our guidance counselors, as well as other support staff such as school psychologists and social workers, and Big Bend Hospice counselors are on campus and available to meet with students today and tomorrow and will continue to offer support as needed. If I can be of any assistance at this time, please don’t hesitate to contact me at the school.

News Release: Tallahassee Police Department

The Tallahassee Police Department is currently investigating the sudden death of a Godby High School student who was at the school when he suddenly became ill. The student was reportedly on the schools outside track when he became sick and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance, where he passed away. Because of the students young age, TPD was called to the hospital and has begun an investigation.

Investigators from TPD's Homicide and Forensic Unit have assumed the investigation and are interviewing all witnesses and processing the scene. TPD's Victim Advocates have also responded to the scene to support the family and friends of the student. The Victim Advocates will be available for anyone who would like their services. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call TPD at (850) 606-5800.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of this tragic event. I can assure the community that we will investigate this case to the fullest extent to determine what has occurred." said TPD Chief Michael J. DeLeo.
