Tallahassee Apartment Complexes Move To Paid Visitor Parking

Florida State and FAMU students moving into off campus housing may be in for a bit of a surprise.

About 20 Tallahassee apartment complexes are starting a new paid parking system for visitors.

Like hundreds of other students, Florida State sophomore Haley Nelson is moving into a new apartment.

The fall semester begins next Monday.

"I'm really excited, it's going to be a big move," Nelson said. "I loved living on campus, but I'm ready to get off and have my own place, so I have some friends and I'm really excited to move in with them," she said.

However, Haley was not as excited to these newly marked visitor parking spaces at her apartment complex.

Visitors will soon have to pay to park at the complex.

"I don't think it's the greatest thing, but I hear they're going to work out the kinks, so maybe it's not as expensive as it seems," she said.

It's all started by a new company called Parknpay App.

Company owner J D Camp tells us he has about 20 college apartment complexes as clients.

Visitors to the complexes can use the app to pay for parking with either a credit or debit card.

Payments can also be made to the company's website.

Camp says it's up to the complexes what to charge.

But he generally says it's only a dollar or two for an extended amount of time.

He says the main purpose isn't money, but safety.

People who pay for the spots, have to submit their names, e-mail address and license plate number complex managers can track.

"I think it's worth it if it's just a couple of dollars just to make sure everybody's who's here is supposed to be here."

The paid parking goes into effect this coming Monday.

It's the same day as the first day of classes for both FSU and FAMU.

A failure to pay could be more costly.

One tow truck operator tells us her company charges $88 dollars to recover a towed vehicle.
