News Release: Thomas University
Thomasville, Ga. -- With more than 150 students who are military veterans, Thomas University officials decided to make them feel more at home on campus with a special lounge area. The Veterans' Lounge will officially open on Monday, Feb. 3, with a ribbon cutting at 9 a.m. followed by an open house until 10 a.m.
Located inside the Music Building on TU's Main Campus, the lounge features a comfortable seating area perfect for veterans to fellowship, study, watch a movie, have coffee or chat with other veterans. The lounge is also equipped with computers and Internet service.
"Great care has been taken to make sure this room is comfortable in its setup and in its location," said Jennifer Lindquist, part of TU's Student Support Services. "The feedback so far on the Veterans' Lounge has been very positive. The veterans are very excited by the possibilities of having this space just for them."
The idea for the lounge came from Faye Johnson, Director of Student Support Services.
"The lounge will definitely serve as a home base where student veterans, of all eras, will have a common site on campus that will automatically provide them with access to an engaging and empowering social support network," Johnson said.
As part of its mission, SSS provides assistance for all veterans, including tutoring, career advising, workshops and more.
Items have been donated by Lowes and Ashley's Furniture, both of Thomasville, as well as TU faculty and staff members. Organizers hope to have additional items added to the lounge in the near future. Mike Morabito, a TU alumnus and a veteran, is building an entertainment center for the room. In the Veterans' Lounge, student veterans can prepare for an exam, watch a movie, have coffee or chat with other veterans.
In addition to the Veterans' Lounge, Thomas University recently launched its chapter of SALUTE, a national honor society for veterans. The honor society recognizes veterans at different levels based on their grade point averages starting with Delta (3.0-3.24) and going up to Alpha (3.75-4.0). More information on SALUTE will be available at the open house.
TU has a long-standing commitment to veterans, which has been recognized by its placement on the Military Friendly Schools list for the past five years. The list provides a resource for military students seeking education. The Military Friendly Schools list also captures the best practices among schools in recruitment and retention of military students.
