Tallahassee, FL - State health officials are partnering with Leon County Schools to increase access to dental care for kids in elementary school.

The Florida Department of Health is starting a pilot program for Leon County second graders.

It will provide dental exams, cleaning, fluoride treatments, and sealants on permanent teeth. It's for free.

Dr. Edward Zapeert with the Florida Department of Health says, "Dental problems are linked to other systematic diseases. But, you look at it from a child's point of view, if they're in any kind of dental pain, just learning in the classroom is that much more difficult and it puts them at a disadvantage."

The dental exams will begin November 4th, starting with Bond Elementary, followed by Riley Elementary School at the beginning of the year.
