Florida State University's Campus Sustainability Press Release

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State University students who are preparing to move out of residence halls at the end of the school year can donate any unwanted but still usable items as part of the fifth annual Chuck It for Charity event.

Kicking off on Tuesday, April 30, and running through Saturday, May 4, Chuck It for Charity aims to collect, weigh and sort all the "stuff" that is usually thrown out when students leave town, such as clothes, books and food. Items will be donated to Tallahassee community agencies in support of their work and the people they help.

"College move-outs produce a tremendous amount of material that is often perfectly fine and reusable," said Elizabeth Swiman, director of Campus Sustainability. "Chuck It for Charity gives us the opportunity to intercept that material before it becomes waste, and get in in the hands of people that really need it."

In the past four years, the program has collected over 43 tons (86,000 pounds) of material, diverting it from the landfill and giving it a second life in the local community, according to Swiman.

This year's goal is to reach 50 tons (100,000 pounds) by the end of the collection period. Donations from last year's collection were distributed to more than 25 local organizations, including food banks, transitional housing for veterans, animal rescue services, homeless shelters and organizations that work with youth in the area.

Collection sites across FSU can be found in each residence hall, Alumni Village, the Center for Leadership and Social Change, the Bridge Lounge in the Oglesby Union, the Wesley Foundation and participating Greek houses.

Off-campus students living in apartment complexes or private residences are encouraged to bring their goods to a campus collection site or donate directly to a Tallahassee community organization.
