News Release: Governor Rick Scott's Office
ORLANDO, Fla. – Tomorrow, December 19, 2013, Governor Rick Scott and Florida retailers will participate in a #ChristmasMiracle press conference, highlighting the Florida National Guard 3rd Artillery Battalion’s homecoming to Florida, along with Publix’s store grand opening.
On Monday, Governor Rick Scott issued a challenge, via Twitter, to major Florida retailers to help raise $35,000 to support troops returning from deployment. Ten Florida retailers answered the call to action. These companies include: Publix, the Florida Retail Federation, Walgreens, Great Bay Distributors, Food Marketers Institute Foundation, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, Badcock Furniture, Chico’s, Bealls, and Wal-mart. Florida retailers raised enough money to bring home approximately 180 soldiers of the Florida National Guard’s 3rd Artillery Battalion.
On Christmas Eve, the 3rd Artillery Battalion of the Florida National Guard is bringing home close to 300 Florida soldiers. These troops will be flown into Camp Shelby, Mississippi, and approximately 180 soldiers are hoping to get home to Florida to be with their families for Christmas.
After Christmas, these troops will be taken back to Camp Shelby to complete their final demobilization interview process, as required by the Department of Defense for all returning soldiers.
