Last year, the Tallahassee Roller Derby team only lost one match... That lonely loss was to the eventual champs from Tampa Florida... Year 2 has the makings for even better results out of the local Rollergirls... G
A brand new season rolled in this weekend for Capital Punishment and the Tallahassee Rollergirls. These ladies, whose real identities range from a teacher to a bartender to even a lawyer, shook up a squad from Mobile, Alabama and put on a show for the homecrowd.
Kelly Ruggles, President of Tallahassee Rollergirls says:
"It's amazing, we worked hard and the girls are always excited. We love getting more and more fans, and you know we'd love even more fans."
Fans are pouring out to get a glimpse of the 2nd best team in the Sunshine State.
Ruggles Says:
"We'd love to be the Number 1 team in the State. We lost to Tampa at the State Championships in February."
LaDawna McDonald, "LaVoodoo" of the Rollergirls says:
"We just placed 2nd in the State Tournament in Tampa back in February so we were itching to get back out, skate and hit girls."
If you're wondering about the competition, let's just say these women don't hold anything back.
Maggie Jones, "Moxie Knockout" of the Rollergirls says:
"You sign up to hit people, then you go and hit people... Simple as that. Somebody looks at you funny, you hit 'em."
The Rollergirls have another home match scheduled for May 3rd against Melbourne (Florida) and then june 14th against Jacksonville (Florida)... Trust that on both of those days, the action will be a lot rougher than practice.
Jones concludes:
"We play eachother in practice and all we get to do is hit each other so you don't hit them nearly as hard... So you play someone you don't know and you get to let it all out... which is always nice... (wink)."
ADDITIONAL QUOTES:
LAVOODOO:
"Generally you start off feeling eachother out and feeling the team out. You learn and then adapt to what's going on."
"Fan turnout is amazing, they support us and we hope it grows even bigger and we can find a bigger venue so we can accommodate everyone that wants to see us."
KELLY RUGGLES:
"It's amazing, we worked hard and the girls are always excited and we love gettingmore and more fans. Our next bout is May 3rd at home and June 14th at home. Then it's August 16th at home. In May, we play the Molly Roger Rollers from Melbourne, FL. In June, we play Jacksonville and in August we have a team coming in from Texas. Austin, TX is where the resurgence of rollerderby started."
MOXIE KNOCKOUT:
"Such a big deal to play all teams in Florida and have outside teams playing us. Makes you remember how much you love this sport and everybody that plays it."
