There are some folks that work for the money... there are others that work for the love of working.

Judith Barrett is one of those people. She works long hours and the money is secondary.

No one does Non profits quite like Judith Barrett. As the executive director of Ability First, it's Barrett's job not to help the patients, but to make sure there's money and resources to stay in business. And Barrett is all about business. She's served in non profits for 33 years, the past eight of them in Tallahassee.

"I accepted that my role in life was non profits a long time ago and it's the freedom to fit in the community and do something with out a lot of bureaucracy."

And when Judith Barrett does something, she does it all the way. For example, she's helped to spear head a number of charitable events like the walk, run, and roll a thon....also, Ability first helps in 6 days, 6 ramps, a chance to help disabled folks better access their house with a new ramp. It's not easy work and it's certainly not glamorous, but the rewards are what its all about.

"Non profits are usually stepping stones for people and they come out of school and they want to do all these wonderful things and then you find out you don't make much money so they'll go someplace else, but a lot of people have stayed here."

Ability first also helps the homeless and those who need a helping hand. Just recently, the group helped a man who was without a home for 20 years. And now, he has his first apartment and is learning how to balance a checkbook. And none of this would be possible without the endless hours of the good people at ability first led by their executive director and someone you should know,
