DeShawn Hollis is Someone You Should Know
|
|
We've all met people that say they love to help kids. But not everyone "really" means it.
But DeShawn Hollis means it. And he's putting in countless hours to prove it.
Like clockwork, DeShawn Hollis pulls up to the Boys and Girls Club with another group of happy campers. He's a part-time employee, volunteering more hours than he actually works--but his job if you call it that is more than just making sure the kids arrive safely--DeShawn is interested in their overall well-being.
"My background was music music and so when I got here they said, what do you want to do with the kids? Naturally, it was music so we started the drum line," said DeShawn Hollis.
And that's where DeShawn Hollis earned his stripes. He's the director of the Stick Patrol at the Boys and Girls Club, a group of kids who's love for music has been enriched through the patience and dedication of Hollis.
"I love music and I love sharing that talent with the kids and so once they show their desire and passion to keep going, it motivates me to keep on teaching."
"The kids really look up to Mr. Hollis. They really learn a lot from him. They, you know, he's their role model," said Club Director Kacy Dennis.
Hollis says he models his performances after FAMU's Marching 100 and FSU's drum line. And there's no clocking in and out, Hollis stays as long as he needs to because this is exactly where he wants to be.
"It was awesome that I was able to get an opportunity to work here. And it's not just to be a volunteer, it's all about the kids."
