Replacing a legend is never an easy task. Dr. Elizabeth Dawson not only fill the shoes of Dr. James Eaton, but she has to oversee the museum that bears his name.
But not only has she welcomed the challenge with open arms, she's thriving and carving out a legacy of her own as we kick off Black History Month.
Dr. Elizabeth Dawson wears a lot of hats at the James Eaton Black Archives Museum. She's a teacher, a curator, a professor, and a doctor---sometimes she's not even sure what to call herself.
"I'm an information gatekeeper. That means I may not have the answer here in the black archives or on campus but my job is to connect," said Dr. Dawson.
When Dr. Eaton passed away in 2004, the torch was passed and Dawson was thrown into the fire. Her job, was to preserve hundreds of years of African-American history. The museum is filled with memories of years gone by. The slave era is prominent in the museum. There are balls and chains, slave beds, and muskets---a visit to the Eaton museum is a great way to spend a few hours to learn that no matter how bad you think you have it, it's nothing compared to what the slaves had to endure.
"Whatever problem you come in here with today, we can handle that because nothing is going to challenge you like slavery."
Dawson says the pieces speak for themselves and all of them can tell a story. Their new exhibit, Forever Brave, will coincide with Black History month and allow visitors to go back in time.
"This entire museum is set up as an educational resource. It's a teaching tool that was mandated by the State of Florida and our charge in 1971 was to collect, preserve, display, and disseminate."
