Many of us know someone who's really good at something---but how many of you know someone who is truly an expert? One FSU professor has spent his entire career studying what makes the great ones great--and he too is pretty spectacular.
Our whole lives we've heard that learning is supposed to be fun. Florida State Scholar and Professor Dr. Andres Ericsson says that's not true at all. Dr. Ericsson has spent his career studying experts and he says to be an expert, you need to put in the work--and that work can be taxing.
"A lot of people find that pushing themselves really hard when they are running is not enjoyable, but we know that to get to be a good long distance athletes, you're going to have to do a lot of that," said Dr. Andres Ericsson.
Dr. Ericsson has been published in the Harvard Business Journal and ESPN the Magazine. He spends time with people who do things better than someone else--better surgeons, musicians, and athletes.
"I think the fundamental question is, are these people born differently? So in some ways, you should be figuring out who's going to be an expert and give the resources to them."
Dr. Ericsson says really excellent people don't stop training--they keep on going, no matter how painful the process. Because the end goal is all that matters.
"The really excellent people, they don't stop with the training. If anything, they make it more of it and also more targeted at what they want to improve."
