Valdosta, GA - Valdosta State tennis parlayed an excellent day one of the ITA South Regional Tournament into a strong second day with Luis Loeffler and Daniel Dueren reaching the quarterfinals and teams of Loeffler and Philip Pakebusch and Dueren and Christian Hansen reaching the semifinals.

The foursome could not be stopped in both matches of the day. Hansen and Dueren stormed through the quarterfinal round, 8-0, over Neil Clausen and Jeff Morris of Rollins. With the win, the team draws Max Wimmer and Emanuel Fraitzl of Barry at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Pakebusch and Loeffler did much of the same with an 8-3 win over Palm Beach Atlantic’s Luke Bolanos and Krasimir Atanasov in the team’s only match of the day. The duo will face Luca Pavanelli and Willi Wolfer of Lynn at 9 a.m. Saturday.

If both VSU teams win, it will be an all Blazer final. It will be the second consecutive season the phenomenon has happened with Dueren and Pakebusch facing off in an all Valdosta State singles final in 2009.

The chances of it also happening in singles has dramatically decreased after the second day of the tournament. Only Loeffler and Dueren are still alive for VSU.

Dueren stormed through Lynn’s Richard Malobicky, 6-1, 6-2, in his first match of the day and followed it with a win over Luca Pavanelli, also of Lynn, by the same score. He will face Barry’s Wimmer at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In his first event as a Blazer, Loeffler has made an early statement. He put away Eckerd’s Ben Maxwell by a score of 6-0, 6-3, and beat Al Sara of Lynn, 6-3, 6-4. He, like Dueren, has yet to go to a third set in singles action. Loeffler will face Argonaut Andrey Pozhidaev at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Pakebush, Konstantin Kutschenko, and Hansen fell in the round of 16. Kutschenko forced a third set when he won the second set, 6-2, but did not have enough in the final set as West Florida’s Leandro Ferriera won 10-7 in the third. Pakebusch forced a tie breaker in the second set, but Vlad Cirla of Lynn won it, 7-6 (4).

Both Frank Sickman and Otto Lenhart lost in the round of 32.
