Tulsa, OK - Men’s tennis junior Sadio Doumbia used a 6-1, 7-6(6) win over Tim Hewitt of Auburn to advance to the second round of the singles qualifying draw at the ITA/D’Novo Men’s All-American Championships Monday at the University of Tulsa.
After taking the first set easily, Doumbia and Hewitt battled in the second to force the breaker. Doumbia found himself down three set points at 3-6 but rallied to win a8-6 to take the straight-set victory and stay alive.
Doumbia must win tomorrow’s second round and Wednesday’s third round matches to advance to join senior Javier Garrapiz in the main draw beginning Thursday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
“Sadio played well, made some good adjustments, and is getting there,” said associate head coach Will Glenn. “He’s been working in practice on a couple things including his serve and has really been getting better. That showed today. He is competing very well. That was probably Auburn’s No. 1 or 2 player that he took out today, so that’s a very good win.”
Junior Wil Spencer dropped his first round qualifying match today by a score of 7-6(5), 6-4 to Peter Kobelt of Ohio State. Senior Drake Bernstein was defeated 7-5, 6-4 by Jonas Lutjen of SEC rival Ole Miss.
Doumbia will play tomorrow in the second round at a time to be announced. He will take on the winner of the first round match between UNC’s Joey Burkhardt and FSU’s Connor Smith.
Also tomorrow Garrapiz and Bernstein will play their first match in the doubles qualifying draw.
