Fort Valley, GA - Everything seemed to go right for Valdosta State Monday night in a 3-0 victory over Fort Valley State to move to 11-5 on the season.
Seven Blazers hit an attacking percentage of .300 or better with a perfect performance from freshman Anna Nichenko (five kills on five attacks). As a team, VSU finished hitting .469 with a high of .688 for the second set.
Valdosta State really hit its stride in the second set. After knocking the Wildcats off in the first set, 25-17, Emelia Saulter served VSU to a 17-0 lead, including three aces, to start the second frame.
Fort Valley State finally broke the run with a kill from Andrea Stephenson, but then VSU rifled off four more points behind Jennifer Bryant’s serves. The Wildcats snuck in one more point before Macy Markham brought the Blazers down the stretch with three more points for a 25-2 final.
Valdosta State did not let up in the third set, taking it 25-8. Katie Onushko served the team to a 15-0 run in the middle of the set. During the run, even freshman setter Hope Ripsam struck a kill off an overpass from FVSU.
Ruthie King and Arielle Parnell led all players in kills with seven each while Irene Hannan notched six. King finished with a .700 percentage and no errors.
Saulter added 18 assists to lead all players and finished with five aces. The team served up 13 aces on the night. Markham led all players with seven digs.
Nikia McBurrows and Stephenson led the Wildcats with four kills apiece while Tionna Bell passed for 10 assists. Bell and Stephenson each tallied four digs to lead FVSU.
Valdosta State’s defense shut down Fort Valley State for just 12 kills and a -.018 attacking percentage.
The Blazers will look to ride their momentum into a conference road trip this weekend. Valdosta State will play at Alabama-Huntsville at 8 p.m. Friday and at 1 p.m. at North Alabama Saturday.
