Athens, GA - Members of Georgia's 1985 NCAA runner-up Lady Bulldog
Basketball team will return to Athens this weekend for a reunion. The team will have a dinner at head coach Andy Landers' house on Saturday and then be recognized at halftime of Sunday's season opener against Georgia Southern.
The 1984-85 Georgia Lady Bulldogs provided one of the most electrifying
campaigns in the program's history, one which culminated with a trip to the NCAA Championship game.
"In my mind, it wasn't only one of our greatest teams, it was one of the
greatest teams in the history of college basketball," Landers said. "The
members of that team comprised the nucleus of what was a great run for Georgia Basketball. They were great kids who were a joy to coach, and I'm excited that we'll have most of them back to Athens this weekend."
The Lady Bulldogs compiled a 24-3 regular-season record and spent the entire season ranked among the nation's top-10 teams, including two weeks at No. 1.
When "March Madness" arrived, Georgia rolled through its first four NCAA Tournament foes Tennessee Tech, No. 18 UCLA, top-seeded Long Beach State and Western Kentucky by more than 20 points per game.
In the NCAA final against Old Dominion, the Lady Bulldogs opened up a 31-22 first-half lead before fouls began to mount. The Monarchs eventually used a late surge to secure a 70-65 victory.
Georgia's 1984-85 roster featured many of the Lady Bulldogs' greatest
players ever, a balanced squad that featured double-digit scoring averages from Janet Harris, Teresa Edwards, Katrina McClain and Lisa O'Connor.
All Lady Bulldog letterwinners have been invited to Sunday's game. A
pre-game reception will be held in their honor and they will be introduced
at halftime prior to the introduction of the 1985 squad.
Georgia begins the regular season this Sunday when the Lady Bulldogs host Georgia Southern at 2 p.m. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive Georgia Basketball t-shirts.
Reserved seat tickets for the game are $5 for adults and $3 for children and will be available at the Stegeman Coliseum box office (closest to Sanford Drive) beginning 90 minutes before tip-off.
UGA students, faculty and staff are admitted to all Lady Bulldog games free of charge with a valid UGA Card. Faculty and staff should pick up tickets at the Coliseum box office. Students are admitted to the arena via the entrance to the left of the box office by showing their UGA Card.
