Gainesville, FL - One day after earning SEC Female Swimmer of the
Week honors for the second time in five weeks, University of Florida
freshman swimmer Elizabeth Beisel (North Kingstown, R.I.) was named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Female Swimmer of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8, 2010, announced Wednesday by

The accolade is a career first for the U.S. National Team member, who
becomes the first Florida swimmer to win the award since former Gator
and seven-time NCAA champion Gemma Spofforth (West Sussex, England) did so on Feb. 23, 2010.

Beisel took home the award after capturing all four of her individual
events with NCAA provisional marks this weekend in Palo Alto, Calif.
Competing against Stanford and Michigan in a double-dual meet, Beisel
clocked 1:54.27 in the 200-yard backstroke, breaking the Avery Aquatics Center record with the fifth-fastest finish in UF history. The time beat out Stanford’s Julia Smit’s 2008 record (1:55.66) by more than a second, while bettering her own nation-best time in 2010-11 by more than half a second.

The 2008 Olympian also swam 4:08.53 in the 400-yard individual medley, the quickest time in the country by almost two seconds, and the sixth-fastest in school history. Four events later, Beisel took the
500-yard freestyle event by over five seconds with a SEC-leading mark of 4:46.34. The time is currently the third-fastest time in the country.
Her 1:59.39 time in the 200 IM was just off her season-best 1:59.10,
which also ranks third in the country.

Beisel has now won a combined four national and SEC weekly honors in
the first five weeks of the season. So far in 2010-11, the North
Kingstown, R.I., native now has NCAA provisional times in eight
different events, while winning a women’s team-leading 16 total events
(14 individual events, two relays).

The Gator swimming and diving program now will have a two-week break
from competition before returning to the pool, Nov. 19-21, as part of
the annual Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, Ga.
