Blazers Run by Edward Waters 58-10

Valdosta, GA – Valdosta State rushed for 352 yards and tied a school record with seven rushing touchdowns as the Blazers defeated Edward Waters 58-10 in non-conference football action at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium Saturday evening.

The win improved VSU to 3-2 while Edward Waters fell to 2-3.

The 352 rushing yards marked the second-highest total in Valdosta State history, behind the 391 put up by the Blazers against Arkansas Tech on September 25, 1999. VSU also passed for 183 yards in the game and forced six EWC turnovers.

Valdosta State scored on five of its six first half possessions to build a 31-10 halftime lead. The Blazers wasted little time in getting on the board as they took the opening kickoff and marched 71 yards on 10 plays to score a touchdown on a five-yard touchdown run by Cedric O'Neal.

After Edward Waters got a 34-yard field goal from Jerry Martin to cut the Blazer lead to 7-3 on its opening drive, VSU again found the end zone as Cayden Cochran scored on a one-yard touchdown run. Meanwhile, after a the Blazers recovered a Tiger fumble on the EWC 31, Regginald Lewis scored on a 21-yard run as time expired in the first quarter to give VSU a 21-3 advantage.

Daniel Andersen added a 30-yard field goal with 8:41 to go in the second quarter before Edward Waters turned a botched punt by the Blazers into a 34-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Turman to Suwayne Hylton. VSU closed out the first half scoring with a 12-yard Cochran to Seantavious Jones touchdown pass with 1:36 remaining in the second quarter.

The Blazers dominated the second half as they scored four rushing touchdowns, by four different players, while holding the Tigers to just 12 yards of total offense in the half. Cochran added a second rushing touchdown less than four minutes into the third quarter while back-up quarterback Graham Craig scored on a one-yard run later in the third. Fellow quarterback Justin Roberts added a one-yard rushing touchdown in fourth quarter while R.J. Davis scored on a 17-yard run three minutes later to close out the scoring.

Twelve different Blazers registered a carry in the game, led by Austin Scott, who rushed 10 times for a team-high 97 yards. O'Neal added 71 yards on 10 carries while Cochran tallied five carries for 70 yards while also completing 10-of-14 passes for 173 yards and one score. Regginald Lewis led the receivers with six catches for 99 yards while Edwin Thermidor had a team-high five tackles, including a sack that forced a fumble.

Edward Waters compiled 107 yards rushing and 76 passing on the night, including 77 yards on the ground by Phillip Teamer. Tony Goodman led the EWC defense with 11 tackles.

Valdosta State returns to action next Saturday, October 6 when it travels to Carrollton, Ga. to face Gulf South Conference foe West Georgia at 2:00 p.m.
