Pensacola, FL -- Valdosta State lost two matches to open a grueling weekend in Pensacola, Fla. The Blazers fell to Grand Canyon, 5-4, and the Lady Blazers lost to Grand Canyon by the same score. The loss drops the men to 8-5 on the season while the women fall to 6-7.

Obviously, losing 5-4 means the Blazers and Lady Blazers put up quite a fight. The Blazers started well with a 2-1 lead after doubles. Christian Hansen and Niklas Herbring defeated No. 19 Stephane Murray and Frederic Schoelzel, 8-3, in the top spot while Konstantin Kutschenko and Nicola Kusy claimed a 9-8 victory over Bastien Tonus and Ahmad Saleem in third doubles. Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk fell in the second spot, 8-6.

With the early 2-1 advantage, the Blazers just needed half of the singles matches to win. They fell just short, getting wins only from No. 19 Hansen in the top spot and Jasyk in the sixth slot. Hansen beat Murray, 6-3, 7-6, while Jasyk prevailed in a marathon against Saleem, 7-5, 2-6, 12-10.

Kutschenko, Herbring, Santiago Vidales and Kusy all fell in second through fifth singles play. The Blazers will look to rebound Friday against Ouachita Baptist.

The women’s match was just a bit different. The Lady Blazers received the wins they needed in singles play, but fell behind, 2-1, in doubles. Juliana Boehm and Michelle Fischer put away Priscilla Annoual and Franziska Schmid, 8-4. Sara Braun and Alina Nagel fell in the top spot, 9-7, while Tina Trautmann and Maja Ehses dropped third doubles, 8-4.

With the early deficit, the Lady Blazers would need four singles matches but only brought in three. Braun won in the second slot over No. 36 Katharina Mittag, 6-3, 6-4. Nagel and Boehm both won, 6-3, 6-4, in the fifth and sixth spots. Unfortunately, Fischer fell at the top against No. 32 Annoual, 6-0, 6-1, and Ehses and Trautmann dropped the third and fourth singles.

The Lady Blazers will try to bounce back with two matches Friday against West Georgia and Northeastern.
