Huntsville, AL - Valdosta State kept its undefeated record in conference play with a 2-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville Friday. The Blazers move to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win. Alabama-Huntsville drops to 2-7 and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference.
The Valdosta State defense continues to keep goalkeeper Olivia Mills out of trouble. She only needed one save to secure her sixth shutout of the season. The Chargers only took four shots with only the one on goal.
Meanwhile, the Blazers were their usual attacking selves with 15 shots, 10 of which were on goal. Midfielder Abbi Edwards led the offensive charge with four shots, two on goal. Leanne Bishop had three shots while three others tallied two. Hannah Mulkey took one, placing it on goal. Edwards, Arielle Sabina and Shealy Kulp each had two shots on goal.
Just under a third of the way through the match, the Blazers put the first goal on the board. Edwards found Morgan Cutts, off the bench, for the go ahead goal to secure a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The second goal was put together by a duo also coming off the bench to show VSU’s excellent depth. Lizzie Lohmar was able to find Margaret Stauffer in the 65th minute to break the game open with Valdosta State’s second goal.
Sunday, the Blazers will look to stay undefeated as they travel to face GSC power West Florida at 4 p.m. in Pensacola, Fla.
