Canyon, TX - The Valdosta State Blazers went west this weekend to Canyon, Texas for a volleyball tournament hosted by West Texas A&M. The Blazers made a strong showing, going 2-0 on the first day, sweeping Eastern New Mexico and Oklahoma Panhandle State to move to 5-1 on the season.
Valdosta State attacked Eastern New Mexico in the middle with Tania Tauiliili leading the way in kills with 13. Katie Onushko and Jennifer Beatty combined for 15 more.
Defensively Ashley Lala and Krista Bradford cleaned the floor. Lala led the team in digs with 21 while Bradford racked up 19. Macy Markham added 10. Lala doubled up with 33 assists as well.
The Blazers tallied six blocks on the way to a 25-19, 25-23, 25-19 victory over Eastern New Mexico.
Valdosta State only needed 28 kills against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Onushko led the team with eight kills while Chelsea Logan contributed six.
Markham registered 12 digs in the second game of the day to lead VSU while Lala tallied 15 assists. Oklahoma Panhandle hit for -.118 to make it easy on Valdosta State, hitting for 30 errors.
The Blazers brought home the 25-18, 25-7, 25-15 win for a strong start at the tournament.
Saturday, VSU will face national powerhouse West Texas A&M and New Mexico Highlands for what will be the team’s tougher day in Texas.
